More travel expected over Memorial Day

More people will be on the move for the Memorial Day weekend than last year, the American Automobile Association is predicting.
AAA projects 34.9 million people across the country will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. That’s a slight increase, about 100,000 travelers, from the 34.8 million people who traveled one year ago. The Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday through Monday.
Approximately 2.1 million New Yorkers will travel this holiday, up from 2.09 million last year. Of those traveling, 1.9 million will be driving, 166,672 will be flying to their destination and 47,402 will be traveling by other mode of transportation.
“Although higher fuel costs are a concern for motorists planning their summer travel vacations, it does not appear to impact the overall vacation decision since it is a relatively small part of the overall travel budget,” said Jim Lehman, an executive vice president, AAA East Central. “Some plan to compensate for the higher fuel costs by cutting other areas of their travel budget such as distance, types of accommodations or length of stay.”
About 30.9 million people plan to drive to their destination, a small decline from the 31 million who drove last year. In spite of gasoline prices more than a dollar per gallon higher than a year ago, automobile travel continues to be the dominant mode of transportation, AAA said.
Almost nine out of 10 holiday travelers (88 percent) will take to the nation’s roadways during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The national average price for regular gasoline is $3.90, compared to $2.85 during the same time last year.
In Niagara County gas was about $4 a gallon on average this week, up from $2.98 a gallon one year ago. The price of gas has continued to trickle downward as the week has gone on, with some area filling stations dipping below the $4 threshold.
Still, there should be little impact of gasoline prices on travel plans, AAA said.
“They may have changed in some ways, but more people will travel,” Bevi Powell, AAA spokesperson, said.
AAA’s survey of intended travelers found that six out of 10 people said rising gasoline prices would not impact their travel plans. Of the remaining four out of 10 travelers who said rising gas prices would impact their travel plans, 70 percent will economize in other areas and the rest will take a shorter trip or travel by an alternate mode of transportation.
Powell said AAA doesn’t believe the price of gas will go up for the holiday.
Across the country, nearly 2.93 million travelers (8 percent of holiday travelers) will fly during the holiday weekend, an 11.5 percent increase from last year’s 2.63 million air travelers.
AAA said the average distance traveled by Americans during the Memorial Day holiday weekend is expected to be 792 miles, which is 27 percent greater than last year’s average travel distance of 626 miles. Air travel is expected to gain a larger share of overall travel and is likely the cause of a substantial increase in the average travel distance compared to a year ago, AAA said. Median spending is expected to be $692, a decrease of 14 percent from $809 last year.
“That’s an unusual trend,” Powell said of the spending.

LA CROSSE: A parade begins at 9 a.m. Monday at Sixth and King streets. The parade is followed by services at: 10 a.m . at Oak Grove Cemetery, with ceremonies at 11 a.m.; 7:30 a.m. at Campbell Cemetery; 10:15 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery; 11 a.m. at French Island Cemetery;

11:15 a.m. at Gate of Heaven Cemetery; noon at Jewish Cemetery; 10:30 a.m. at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park; and 11:15 a.m. in Riverside Park.

Onalaska: Parade starts at 9:30 a.m. at the American Legion, Sand Lake Road, travels south on Sand Lake Road to the Onalaska Veterans Memorial in the Onalaska Cemetery. Ceremony at the memorial begins at 10 a.m. Coffee, juice and doughnuts will be served at the Legion prior to the parade and a lunch will be served after the service.

HOLMEN: Parade starts at

9:30 a.m. at the Legion grounds at Halfway Creek Park and travels north on Main Street to Holmen Middle School, where a service will be conducted.

BANGOR: Program begins at 9 a.m. at the high school and features retired Master Gunnery Sergeant Bradley Chandler as speaker. After the ceremony at the high school, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will march to Fairview Cemetery. After a short program, the two organizations will split up to visit seven rural cemeteries. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion will travel to Gaylord Park in Rockland at 2 p.m. to dedicate the new Veterans Memorial built under the leadership of Boy Scout Aaron Manzella.

West Salem: Observances begin at 10 a.m. at the Village Park under the direction of American Legion Post 51 and will include a reading of the names of local veterans who have died from the Civil War to the present day. After a rifle salute, the American Legion will conduct brief ceremonies at Vets Park and the Lake Neshonoc campground.

Viroqua: A rifle salute by the Viroqua Unit of the Wisconsin National Guard and taps by Jennie Solverson at the Pioneer Cemetery on North Rock Avenue begins at 9:45 a.m. The parade starts at 10 a.m., with Keith Yahn of VFW Post 3032 serving a parade marshal. The program will be in the Viroqua Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. The main address will be given by Mike Callan, a third generation Marine who served during the Vietnam era. After the program, VFW Post 3032 will host its annual chicken barbecue dinner in the clubrooms.

Westby: Westby American Legion Post 155 and VFW Post 8021 will conduct ceremonies at the following cemeteries and locations: Our Savior's on Saugstad Road, 8:30 a.m.; Vang Lutheran on Vang Road and Hwy. 14/61, 8:45 a.m.; Skogdalen Lutheran, Timber Coulee, County Hwy. P, 9:10 a.m.; North Coon Prairie, Sunrise Road,

9:30 a.m.; Norseland Nursing Home, 9:45 a.m.; Westby Veterans Memorial, 9:55 a.m., where a short service will be held; Coon Prairie, Coon Prairie Road, 10:15 a.m.; United Methodist Church, East Ridge Road and Quarry Road, 10:45 a.m.; Bethesda Lutheran, East Ridge Road and Bethesda Road, 10:55 a.m.; Bloomingdale, at the intersection of Bloomingdale and Hwy. Coon Valley: Military rites will be performed by Coon Valley American Legion Post 116 on the following schedule:

A parade will head down Central Avenue in Coon Valley beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the post office and ending at the Veterans Memorial.

The 11 a.m. Memorial Day program will be held at the Veterans Memorial in the village park. The guest speaker will be Howard Sherpe.

In case of inclement weather, the program will be at the Coon Valley Village Hall. After the program, there will be lunch served at the Legion Hall by the Auxiliary Unit 116.

Soldiers Grove: Soldiers Grove American Legion Post 220 will begin its annual Memorial Day observance with members meeting at Post 220 at 9 a.m. to proceed to Gays Mills for its parade at 10 a.m.

Immediately after the parade, Legionnaires will return to the Soldiers Grove American Legion Hall for the program at 11:15 a.m. Weather permitting, the program will be outside. The Memorial Day address will be given by Veterans Service Officer Laura Moore.

De Soto: De Soto VFW Post 8123 will conduct services at the following cemeteries on Memorial Day:

De Soto, 9:30 a.m.; Walnut Mound, Retreat, 10 a.m.; West Prairie, 10:30 a.m.; Rising Sun, 11 a.m.; Freeman Lutheran, 11:30 a.m.; Ferryville, noon.

In addition, the post will sponsor a free cookout for veterans and their families. The cookout, which includes live music, will be from 1 to 3 p.m. in the De Soto Community Center.

Readstown: The Readstown Area Historical Society will host the annual observance in Bliss Memorial Park at 9 a.m. If there is inclement weather, the program will be held at the Readstown Advancement Building. Speaker will be Bob Randall.

La Farge: La Farge VFW Post 9075 will host its annual program at 10 a.m. in La Farge High School.

Viola: The village's program will be held at 11 a.m. in the Viola Cemetery. In case of rain, the program will be held in the Kellogg Shelter or the community building.

Black River Falls: Services will begin at 10 a.m. in Riverside Cemetery.

Melrose/North Bend: Legionnaires muster at the Melrose Legion Hall at 8:45 a.m. and march to the Melrose Cemetery at 9 a.m. The program begins at 9:15 a.m.

Programs also will be held at the North Bend Cemetery at 10:20 a.m., South Beaver Creek Cemetery at 11 a.m. and Cataract Cemetery at 10:30 a.m.

Merrillan: The American Legion Auxiliary and VFW will hold services in Merrillan at 9 a.m. at Merrillan's Oakwood Cemetery. A representative from Fort McCoy will serve as guest speaker.

Millston: Millston will hold its services at 11 a.m. at Brookside Cemetery off Millston Road. A lunch will follow at the Millston Community Center.

Minnesota

La Crescent: La Crescent's Memorial Day schedule starts at 8:30 a.m. with cemetery services. A Memorial Day parade starts at 11:30 a.m. on Walnut Street, lining up in front of Heth Hardware by 11:25 a.m. Marching units include the American Legion color guard,

La Crescent High School and others marching to Veterans Park for an 11:45 a.m. program. After the program, a chickencue dinner will be served in the Legion clubroom.

La Crescent American Legion Post 595 will hold short memorial services conducted by its color guard and firing square at the following cemeteries:

The parade proceeds to the city park, where a Memorial Day address will be given by James Sauer and several patriotic musical selections will be presented by the band. The program continues with graveside services at Mount Hope and Mount Calvary cemeteries.

Brownsville: A memorial service at Zion Evangelical Church Cemetery by the VFW Post and Auxiliary at 10 a.m.

followed by a program at the Brownsville Community Center at 10:45 a.m., where the Auxiliary will present readings and the Gettysburg Address will be recited. At 11:30 a.m. there will be a march to the river for a service at 11:45, followed by a noon potluck dinner at the community center. In case of inclement weather, the cemetery service and march to the river will be canceled. However, the community center service and dinner will be held as scheduled.

Houston: A memorial service starts at 10 a.m. in Houston City Park, sponsored by American Legion Post 423. In case of rain, the service will be at Houston High School.

Memorial Day Pow-Wow

Ho-Chunk Nation: The Ho-Chunk Nation will hold its annual Memorial Day Pow-Wow May 28-30 in Black River Falls. Grand entries will take place at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 1 p.m. Monday. The event is free and open to the public. This year's event honors veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom.
